Frequently Asked Questions about SustainableWorks

Document Actions

SustainableWorks is a non-profit organization that facilitates energy efficiency retrofits for homes and small commercial buildings. These retrofits create high-quality Green Jobs for underserved communities, reduce carbon emissions, reduce energy costs, and increase home values.

If I choose to retrofit my home how will the process work?

  1. You request an energy audit from SustainableWorks and give us the release of your utility information.
  2. We assess your home to determine whether you are likely to benefit from an energy retrofit and to go over the process in depth.
  3. If your home is eligible, we will conduct a full energy audit that will determine where and how you can save money.
  4. Our energy specialist will review the results of the audit with you, explain where you can save energy and money, outline financing options, and create a plan for your specific needs.
  5. We will facilitate all the financing and the actual retrofit work on your home – coordinating federal funding, utility incentives and loans. .
  6. After the work is done, we follow-up to ensure that you are satisfied and that the energy savings measures were effective.

    How much will this cost?

The energy audit costs $95, but if we determine that it doesn’t make sense to do work on your home that money will be fully refunded.

To pay for your project we will apply incentives that we have negotiated with the utilities and apply federal stimulus funds that have been appropriated to assist with energy efficiency. You will be responsible for the balance and have the option to take out a loan to finance the retrofit; the size of the loan will depend on the amount of work that you choose to do. However, our model will save you more on your utility bill than you pay for the loan each month. This means that in the short run you will have a more comfortable and energy efficient home and in the long run - once you pay off any loans - you will see the complete benefit of the energy savings. In other words, getting work done on your home will come at zero out-of-pocket cost! In addition, current tax code allows you to get a credit of 30% of qualifying work done up to $1,500. You’ll get this refund when you file your federal income taxes next year.

I don’t like dealing with contractors and bankers. Will this be a hassle?

SustainableWorks will organize all of the contracting and the financing - you won’t have to jump through any hoops or worry about being duped. Also, we will explain your options, costs, and savings potential. We will work with you throughout the process to ensure that you understand and are happy with the results.

Why should I work with SustainableWorks?

There are a lot of reasons for you to work with us. First, you will save money and increase the value of your home. Second, you will reduce carbon emissions and help fight global climate change. Finally, you will be involved in a project that will help rebuild our economy by creating sustainable and high-quality jobs.
